4.Kanshung Face-Kharta to Everest Trek
Kangshung Valley to East Face Everest base camp trekking
21 day from arrival at Lhasa airport until departure via the Nepal border.

The eastern, Kangshung, face of Mt. Everest (Qomolungma) and the valley beneath it is scenically one of the most dramatic locations in the Himalaya. Our staff helped to pioneer this trek and it remains a rarely visited area with only a few expeditions coming each year. Ten days of walking takes us in a circuit far from any road and into a glacial valley nestled between the Everest and Makalu massifs, an unforgettable location amidst the world's highest peaks.
The first three days in Lhasa allows clients time to acclimatise and visit the important sites around the city. On the drive south we take the scenic old road and leave time for visiting the sacred lake of Yamdrak Tso, unique monasteries in Gyantse and Shigatse, and then continue to the end of the road at Kharta.
We begin trekking on day nine and cross the Shaola pass (4,800m) to enter the uninhabited Kama valley, This unusual high-altitude valley receives warm, moist air escaping up from Nepal and so has a unique eco-system with a wide diversity of flora.
We trek through alpine meadows, juniper and rhododendron forests, and past mountain tarns to reach the outlet of the Kangshung glacier. Here we walk beneath the soaring faces of Chomolonzo (7,815m) and Makalu (8,463m) and into the lap of Mt Everest (8,848m) and Lhotse (8,501m) with a high camp in the meadows beside the glacier. With nothing but snow peaks rising all around us while we relax in idyllic meadow of Pethang Ringmo it is easy to see how this is the secret northern entrance to the fabled "Hidden Land" of Khembalung. The geographic isolation and spectacular environment combining sheer ice mountain faces and alpine glaciers with sub-tropical forests make this a truly one-of-a-kind location.
We return to our vehicles with four days of trekking via the slightly higher Langmala pass (5,100m) to complete the circuit back at Kharta.
The vehicles will be waiting to take us back up to the plateau and we spend one nigh at Tingri before dropping the clients at the border on day 20 of the itinerary. With and early start from Tingri it is possible to watch sunrise hit Mt. Everest, Cho Oyu and much of the Himalaya before dropping past Mt. Shishapangma to cross the border into Nepal the same day.
